The 4 BIG Reasons People Fail…

Reason #1 – Not Being Comfortable in Your Own Skin... As a producer, it's easy to get distracted. The latest hot single comes out and you find yourself saying "I want to make a beat like that!" Or you might find yourself thinking "Maybe I should change the way I make beats because that song sounds better than anything I've done." As tempting as it is to always be switching up your style, it can be counterproductive in terms of what it does for your ability to really advance in the industry. The fact of the matter is, there aren't many top-notch, big time producers who make several different types of music. For example, if you take a producer like Jazzy Pha and listen to 10 of his beats, you're going to hear a lot of similarities across all of them. He has developed what people call "his sound." You'll hear elements in each beat, that let you know it is a "Jazzy Pha Production." Maybe it's the snare, the strings, or the kick pattern. It could just be the way the percussion is sequenced, or the synth pattern. Whatever it is, he found "his sound" and has worked at perfecting that sound over the years. FACT: Good producers find their sound and then they stick to it.

Reason #2 – Not Developing Your "Hook"... The bottom line is, in order to stand out in this industry; you must have “your sound.” You must be distinguishable from the competition. You NEED to know how to find your “hook” sound - your signature - your beat. You NEED to nail that early in the piece and then build on it. Creating your signature sound is everything. It's the most exciting, fun and challenging aspect of becoming a great producer. Do it right and artists will be knocking down your door waving dollars in your face. FACT: Your “hook” is just as crucial to the definition of your beat as the vocals are - sometimes more crucial.

Reason #3 – Choosing The WRONG Setup ... There are many different opinions on this subject and every producer is going to have his or her recommended setup. There's all sorts of ways you can go. The MOST important thing is not to have the WRONG setup. Most people think you have to spend thousands of dollars to setup a whole ‘studio’ of equipment. But the truth is, you can do it for a mere fraction of what others spend …And you can compete with any top producer out there who might be working with a set-up costing thousands of dollars more. FACT: You can spend a little and still get the RIGHT equipment.

Reason #4 – Poor Mixing and Mastering... As music starts to get louder and louder, beat makers have to come up with new compression tools to make their masters win the “loudness war”. When producing your beats you have to make sure you not only match but actually EXCEED the expectations of the artists you’re trying to sell to.
